Andalusia and Opp dueled Monday night in a close game to the very end, but Opp prevailed over the Bulldogs, 8-6.
Andalusia’s Brent Shiver sent a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game up, but Opp’s Zack Sasser and Spencer Youmans both hit an RBI single apiece to score the two runs that won the game.
“We’re proud to win the game,” Opp coach Jack Whigham said. “That was the last time the seniors will get to play Andalusia and it was good to get the win.
“We have five area games left and we need to win them all,” he said.
The Bobcats move to 8-6, 1-2 in Class 4A, Area 2, and will host Ashford in an area game Thursday at 5 p.m.
Earlier in the game, Opp went up 2-0 in the second, but the Bulldogs (11-10, 2-0 in Class 4A, Area 3) scored four runs in the bottom half of the same inning to go up by two.
The game then went to a 6-5 Opp lead in the third inning before Shiver’s home run in the sixth.
Andalusia coach Jonathan Rasberry said the team will put the loss behind them and will get focused on the games later this week.
“We’ve got bigger fish to fry Thursday and Friday,” Rasberry said. “These were two teams that competed (Monday night). I thought Brent did a great job.”
Softball: AHS 9, Greenville 5
In earlier action Monday night, the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs (8-8, 1-0 in Class 4A, Area 3) defeated Greenville 9-5 at the Andalusia Sports Complex.
“We pitched three different pitchers Monday night and they did a pretty good job,” Andalusia coach Anthony Mikel said. “Two seventh graders and one eighth grader.”
Mikel said the defense could have been better.
“The defense wasn’t as good as it has been,” he said. “But, we’re starting to come together as a team. They are playing with a lot of heart.”
Both teams will be traveling on Thursday in area play.
The baseball team will travel to Thomasville and will start at 4:30 p.m., while the softball team will be in Evergreen to take on Hillcrest-Evergreen at 4 p.m.
