Students in Dawn Thompson’s senior English classes at Andalusia High School have an extra component to their research papers this year.

In addition to researching a topic, they also are required to complete a project related to the topic.

“Every year, I give the seniors one word, and they have to develop a concept from beginning to end. They have to think critically and creatively,” she said. “This year, the theme is ‘Be the Change!’ ”

The program developed by Mud and Ink Teaching, has four components – learning, writing, sharing and giving.

“They have to do a traditional research paper on an issue they would like to change, and then do a related service project,” Thompson said.

Projects include Jesse Jane Journey bags for foster kids; Paws for a Cause, a fundraiser for the animal shelter; Hurricane Michael relief; a tailgate party at the nursing home; Full Tummy Project of Covington County; and toy drives.

Students may team up on service projects, but must research different aspects of the core issue. For the service project, they may do eight hours of volunteer work, or raise $80 for a cause. Alternately, they may do a combination of volunteering and fundraising.
