GETTING BACK ON TRACK: Straughn Tigers look to knock off rival Opp

The Straughn Tigers (0-2) are looking to get in the win column as they prepare to open up region play on Friday against Opp (0-1).
“Opp is a very good team,” Straughn head coach John Higgins said. “We are going to have to be physical with them. We also have to execute, which we haven’t done that the past two weeks.”
Higgins said the Tigers have been working hard at practice the past few weeks.
“We have had a few good weeks of practice,” Higgins said. “We feel like we have a good game plan this week. Right now, we just have to continue to improve each week.”
Despite losing last week to St. James, Higgins said he felt the Tigers played better than the week before.
“We played hard on Friday,” Higgins said. “St. James had a really good team, but I was glad that we cut down on turnovers. We moved the ball well at times, but we have to be more consistent with the offense.”
This week, Higgins said they are preparing for anything.
“Opp has pretty good team this year,” Higgins said. “They have a big line and a really tall wide receiver. They did lose their quarterback last week so we don’t really know how they are going to handle that. We are going to have to prepare for anything.”
The Tigers are looking to break a streak of losses to Opp.
“They have beaten us the past three years,” Higgins said. “We want to break that streak and keep these seniors from being the first class to never beat Opp. This is a rivaly game and it’s the first region game of the season for both teams.”
Higgins said they are still focusing on improving themselves rather than focusing on their opponent.
“This is a big game for us because it’s the next game on the schedule,” Higgins said. “Right now, we are still working on Straughn. We have to get better at the things that we do and we have to start playing as a team. Our main focus at this point is on improving Straughn.”
Straughn is 0-2 on the season after falling to Headland (43-0) in week one and St. James (37-0) last week.
Opp also enters the game looking for their first win as they fell to Elba 53-33 last week.
Straughn and Opp are scheduled for a 7 p.m., kickoff on Friday in Straughn.
