In investigating what was first called a drive-by shooting in Andalusia on Saturday night, August 11, the Andalusia Police Department learned of a number of crimes in that neighborhood that had gone unreported, Chief Paul Hudson said Monday.
Shots were fired on Oak Street in downtown Andalusia at approximately 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, according to previous releases from the APD. Officers, assisted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, worked through the night to try to solve the crime. Anonymous callers had identified only a black vehicle driving without its lights on, and no one could initially provide a vehicle description or suspect information.
But this Sunday, August 26, the APD announced two Mississippi men had been charged in the case. A third suspect has not been identified.
Santonio Davis, 18, and Tyrone Davis, Jr. 23, both of Moss Point, Mississippi, face charges of three (3) count of Attempted Murder (Class A Felony) and three (3) counts of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling (Class B Felony). A third suspect has not yet been identified. The individuals are currently being held waiting extradition in a Mississippi Detention Center.
Hudson would not discuss any other aspect of the case on Monday.
Pressed for further information about unreported crimes” cited in a press release on Sunday, he said during the course of the investigation into the shooting, people mentioned drug deals, other incidents of people shooting guns, and car burglaries occurring in the area.
“None of those had been reported,” Hudson said. “We can’t investigate what we don’t know about.”
He said he does not know why the incidents were not reported.
“We asked,” he said. “They said, ‘We just didn’t.’ ”
Hudson stressed that callers who report crimes can remain anonymous.
“All they have to do is call the station,” he said.
Calles may dial 911 and be transferred to the APD, or may dial the APD directly at 334.222.1155.
Hudson praised the APD Criminal Investigations Division and lead investigator Cody Warren for their work on the case.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency -SBI, the Gautier (Mississippi) Police Department, Pascagoula (Mississippi) Police Department, Lost Point(Mississippi) Police Department, Jackson County (Mississippi) Sheriff’s Office, and US Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force (Montgomery, AL & Gulfport, MS offices).
