The Andalusia High School volleyball team will hold a camp this month for the children of Covington County.

“We have wanted to do something like this and just haven’t been able to before now,” Lady Bulldog varsity head coach Angie Grimes said. “We want it to be something fun, but also a learning experience for the kids.”

Children from second through sixth grade from any school are eligible to attend the camp.

The camp will run from June 25-28 at Andalusia High School.

Campers will be split into two sessions. Second and third graders will go from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Fourth through sixth graders will go from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

“It’s important that we get these girls started at an early age,” Grimes said. “We want to get more involved with the younger girls.”

With the new director of the City of Andalusia’s Department of Leisure Services coming in soon, Grimes said that hopefully they could get something started with the city.

“We would love to see a youth volleyball league started here,” Grimes said. “A lot of the teams that we play in high school have girls that got started in rec ball.”

Grimes and junior varsity head coach Sarah Kelley stressed the importance of teaching them how to play early.

“A lot of people were asking about us doing a camp and we have wanted to do one,” Kelley said. “This is a great opportunity to get them some exposure to the sport early.”

During the camp, the participants will learn the ins-and-outs of volleyball from Grimes, Smith, assistant coach Aubrey Morgan and the Lady Bulldog volleyball players.

“We will work on a lot of agility drills with the kids,” Grimes said. “We will talk about the basics of volleyball and them importance of showing good sportsmanship. We will have the nets lowered so that they can learn how to play the right way. They will play for a reward of Skittles. We just want it to be something fun for them, but also something that they can learn about volleyball.”

Grimes said that she hopes this is a camp that they can continue to have for years to come.

“This is something that we are going to try and have every summer,” Grimes said. “It’s a good way to introduce the young girls in the area to the game of volleyball. We think it’s going to be great. We have had a lot of people ask about us putting on a camp for kids and we were finally able to actually do one.”

The players usually have a skills camp for the themselves during the summer, but Grimes said the Lady Bulldogs will be traveling to Enterprise to take part in a camp put on by Florida State volleyball coaches.

There is a $25 registration fee and discounts for siblings. The registration fee also includes a camp T-shirt.

Registration can be found at the office at the high school and on the school’s website. Registration is open until the day of the camp, but to be guaranteed a T-shirt campers need to register by June 12.
