Participants needed for color run for education

Calling all runners and walkers, the Opp Khelpanan Society needs your help to get tie-dyed in their back to school color run.

Organizers Amy Harper and Melissa Barnes spoke to the Opp City Council Monday night and said the proceeds from the color run will go to purchase school supplies for local students.

“We are trying to raise money to donate back,” Harper said. “Our civic organization gives back to the schools and helps the city with projects.”

Harper said the race will be set up similar to the Rotary Club’s annual Scarecrow 5K.

“We will have three different colors to throw chalk all throughout the race,” she said. “We will have different stations throughout the race, and you will look like a rainbow.”

This is the first ever color run in Opp.

Barnes said it’s the perfect event for the whole family because it’s free for children 5 and under.

“We are hoping to drum up support since this is for our kids,” Barnes said. “We hope to keep on getting new members to our club. Most of our members are women who lead very active lives. We want to be a part of the change we wish to see in our community.”

The race is set for Sat., Aug. 12, at Frank Jackson State Park.

All proceeds will go to support Opp City Schools and Fleeta Junior High School to help the schools provide school supplies.

Registration will be that morning at 7 and the race will begin at 9.

Pre-registration is $25 per person and includes a T-shirt. Registration the day of the race will cost $30.

Barnes said the deadline to preregister online at active.com is Aug. 1, but you may preregister with a member of the Khelpanan Society until Aug. 5 in order to receive a T-shirt.

Spectators and participants are asked to also bring school supplies for donations.

Registration forms are available at Mizell Wellness Center, Body Conscious and Opp City Hall.
