Alabama State Troopers are investigating eight traffic fatalities from the extended Fourth of July weekend. Seven of the eight involved people were not wearing seatbelts.

According to a news statement by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), a 12-year old passenger was killed in St. Clair County while drivers died in six counties, including from Baldwin, Cherokee, Escambia, Marshall, St. Clair and Talladega.

A pedestrian was also killed in Madison County.

ALEA said that 272 out of 328 traffic fatalities, so far in 2017, were in vehicles equipped with seatbelts, but only 95 were using seatbelts at the time of the fatal crashes.

Among those 328 fatalities, seven were children aged 5 and under. At least two of those children were not restrained with a seatbelt.

“It’s not an opinion that wearing your seatbelt can save your life. It’s a fact,” ALEA Cpl. Jess Thornton said. “There would be a lot of people still with us today just by taking that extra couple seconds and buckling up. Fasten your seatbelt, someone needs you.”

Troopers assigned to the Marine Patrol Division are also investigating a drowning in Winston County.
