Stealing street signs may almost be a rite of passage for teenagers and young adults, but the Opp Police Department has it has become a problem over the last few weeks.

Two stops signs and two no dumping signs have been stolen off of Walding Road, which is located off of the U.S. Hwy 84 between the Florala Hwy and Horn Hill.

One stop ahead sign was taken off of Adams Road, which is off of U.S. Hwy. 331.

“Not only is it against the law for someone to remove or possess these signs, but the person could also be responsible if an accident occurs at one of these intersections because of the removal of the sign,” Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said. “If anyone has information, please contact the Opp Police Department.”

Alabama law says that no person may unlawfully possess any traffic sign erected by the state, a county or a municipality.

Any person who voluntarily notifies a law enforcement agency of the presence of their property of a traffic sign shall not be guilty of violating the law.

It is also unlawful for any person to intentionally destroy, knock down, remove, deface, or alter any letters or figures on a traffic sign, or in any way damage any traffic control device, erected on a highway, public road or right of way of this state, by the Department of Transportation, a county, or municipality.
