Heavy rain and the potential for flash flooding remain the dominant threats for Covington County from as Tropical Storm Cindy moves ashore today, Covington County EMA director Susan Harris said.

Based on the National Weather Service’s 6 a.m. briefing, she said:

• Additional heavy rain bands will continue moving into the area through today. Two to four inches of rain is expected, with higher totals possible in some areas.

The rains may shift west of South Central Alabama by this afternoon.

• A flash flood watch remains in effect, with most of Covington County included in the “extreme threat” area for flooding.
• The threat for isolated tornadoes continues.
• Coastal flooding, especially along the Alabama coastlines, with widespread rip currents.
• Minor river flooding is expected at Big Escambia Creek at Flomaton; Burnt Corn Creek at Brewton; and Murder Creek at Brewton.
