The Town of Gantt is asking residents to attend its July meeting to give their thoughts on some proposed community enhancement projects in the town. Town Clerk Christy Cartwright said Wednesday that town officials want to build a community/storm shelter.
The town plans to apply for a Community Enhancement Fund of the Community Development Block Grant program through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
The fund is available to all eligible communities to use for projects that address quality of life issues, which includes community centers and recreational facilities.
The grant ceiling is $250,000.
Cartwright said they plan to build the community center across from town hall, which is located on Commerce Street.
“If we get funded and built that, we will apply the following year and add a park,” she said. “This is in the very early stages, but the first step is seeing what our citizens think and getting letters and feedback from them.”
Cartwright said that since they are applying for a grant, they would like letters of support from the citizens.
“The more interest from citizens, the more likely we will get funding,” she said.
Cartwright said the demographics of Gantt are changing some.
“We used to be primarily an older community, but we have lots of young families now,” she said.
The next meeting is July 10, at 6 p.m.
