Gymnastics has become a way of life for Red Level High seventh grader Caylee Douglas, and she has been hard at work training for the Southeast Regional gymnastics meet in Mobile on April 23.

“I’m excited to see competition from other states,” Caylee said. “I’ve never really competed against people from other states, and I look forward to seeing how I do.”

Training for the meet is something that Caylee said she takes very seriously.

“I really have to pay attention to little details during training,” Caylee said. “It’s very important to get the timing down. I’m still working on the timing on my routine.”

In four years of competing in gymnastics, Calyee has been in 23 total events and racked up 93 medals out of a possible 115.

“It’s really pretty incredible when you look at everything she has accomplished in four years,” Caylee’s mother Delores said. “On top of that, she also still maintains a 4.0 GPA.”

The accomplished gymnast has earned 54 gold medals, 30 silver medals and nine bronze medals. She has picked up two state championships in the floor event and one in the beam event. In four trips to the state championship, she gained two All-Around silver and bronze medals.

With no gymnastics teams in the area, Caylee goes to Enterprise each week to train with her team and coaches.

“At least three or four times a week we go over to Enterprise for her to train,” Delores said. “She will be in the back eating her supper and doing her homework. We are just doing what we need to do to get her where she wants to be.”

Beginning this summer, Caylee will have to move to a new team to continue her progress.

“The team in Enterprise only goes up to level seven, which is where she is at now,” Delores said. “We will probably join the team in Montgomery, and with the higher level we will be there four days a week.”

Caylee said that a dance teacher got her interested in gymnastics.

“I started off taking dance and tumbling,” Caylee said. “One of my teachers use to be a gymnast and after two years of taking tumbling, she told that she thought I would do good in gymnastics and should give it a try.”

Caylee began going to Enterprise in August 2012 to take classes and made the team by December of the same year.

“I really enjoy being on the team,” Caylee said. “I also enjoy competing against myself and show people what I enjoy doing.”

Caylee said that gymnastics is something she wants to do in some form for a long time.

“I want to become a college gymnast one day,” Caylee said. “Alabama is where I would like to go college. Hopefully, I can get a full scholarship based on gymnastics and my academics. Eventually, I want to become a gymnastics coach.”
