River Falls town property could soon become a smoke-free and tobacco-free workplace area.
The town council had its first reading of a proposed new ordinance Tuesday.
Mayor Patricia Gunter said the ordinance is to protect the health and welfare of employees and citizens.
The ordinance would restrict the use of tobacco products in and upon the premises owned or leased by the town.
The ordinance makes violating it a misdemeanor.
Each violation will constitute a separate offense.
The fine will be $25 to $100 per offense.
The council may or may not designate a tobacco use area.
They would post signs letting employees and residents know the facility is tobacco free.
MaryAnn Andrews, town clerk, said there are no town employees who currently smoke.
Additionally, Town Attorney William Alverson was asked to help write an employee handbook, which will include policy on random drug and alcohol testing.
The council will vote on the ordinance at its April meeting.
No council member voiced opposition to the ordinance.
