Libertyville firefighters estimate some 35 acres burned Sunday, despite a four-hour, multi-jurisdictional effort to suppress what began as a controlled burn.

Capt. Brandon Holland said that around 4:22 p.m., Sunday, the fire department was dispatched to the area of Sammy Brown Road and County Road 32.

Units en route to the scene requested mutual aid from Forestry Service and Red Oak Fire Department.

After they arrived on the scene, help from Sanford Fire Department was requested as well.

Officials said that fire units were able to protect nearby structures until Forestry arrived.

Forestry deployed their dozier to create a fire line to contain the fire.

Firefighters say weather conditions helped slow the fire.

“All units cleared the scene around 8:30 p.m.,” he said.

Holland said the controlled burn being performed did have a permit and had a fire break around the area.

There were no industries.
