Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked the 46 remaining Obama administration U.S. attorneys to submit their resignations, according to the Justice Department.

“As was the case in prior transitions, many of the United States attorneys nominated by the previous administration already have left the Department of Justice,” Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement. “The attorney general has now asked the remaining 46 presidentially appointed U.S. attorneys to tender their resignations in order to ensure a uniform transition.”

Flores said that the career prosecutors in the more than 90 U.S. Attorney’s offices will oversee cases.

The Trump administration has not nominated any new U.S. attorneys.

Sessions, a former U.S. Attorney, was asked to resign by Clinton administration attorney general Janet Reno in 1993.

However, the George W. Bush and Obama administrations eased the U.S. attorneys out while they sought replacements for those positions.
