Students in LBW’s Honors Program on Monday helped put the finishing touches on a library for students in the APPLE after-school program.

LBW English and speech instructor Kristy White said she approached APPLE coordinator Barbara Tyler about a library after hearing a student complain that she didn’t want to turn in her library book because she loved it.

“Each year, at Community Christmas, children ask for books, but people don’t buy them,” White said.

Tyler was able to make available a large multipurpose room for the APPLE library, and city workers have painted and improved the lighting and flooring. Shelves were added, and leftover books from when the facility housed Andalusia Middle School were found.

LBW ethics Honors instructor Maria Thigpen and White worked with students to sort a closet full of books into age-appropriate sections. The students are shown wearing the masks from a “Who’s Who” series.

White said volunteers hope to find sponsors for bean bags for students to use in the library.
