LBWCC head baseball coach Steve Helms etched his place in the history books on Saturday as the Saints swept Enterprise State Community College to give Helms 900 career victories.
“When you have been somewhere for a long time, I guess it starts to add up,” Helms said. “First, the good Lord has blessed me to be able to be in one place for 26 years, but really 900 is just a number. The best part about it has been all of the phone calls and texts that I’ve gotten from former players. They overcame the mistakes I might have made as a coach and they have became great men.”
For Helms, it’s not about the wins or the losses, but the players.
“At the end of the day, the wins and losses aren’t really what matters,” Helms said. “It’s more about our program helping mold these kids into men that have a positive influence on those around them.”
Helms said that getting to 900 wins wouldn’t have been possible without the people around him.
“I’ve been blessed to have some great coaches and players over the years,” Helms said. “There are probably only a handful of games that I have won based with my decisions, but I’ve lost a lot of them. I can’t say enough about my assistant coaches. They are they ones that do most of the work and I just get the credit.”
When asked about the possibility of getting to 1,000 wins, Helms just laughed.
“I’m just hoping right now that I can eventually get to 901,” Helms said jokingly. “That’s not what we do this for, though. The other coaches and myself we just want to do what we can to help these kids become the type of men who go on to be great fathers and leaders in their communities. We just want to be able to point them in the right direction.”
