American consumers aren’t chicken when it comes to eating poultry. In fact, annual chicken consumption per person increased by almost 10 pounds from 1994 to 2008.

On average, one person eats almost 50 pounds of chicken per year. One study attributes the rise in chicken’s popularity to meals eaten away from home – either at restaurants, fast food places or school cafeterias.

The fact that chicken remains a popular meal choice is good news for Alabama poultry farmers, who rank third in broiler chicken production in the America. Poultry and egg production in the state employs over 86,000 people with an economic impact of $15 billion in Alabama.
