Panthers topple Tigers

The Straughn Tigers put forth a solid effort, but were swept by the Georgiana Panthers Thursday night in Straughn.
GIRLS
GEORGIANA 43, STRAUGHN 35
In the opening varsity match, the Straughn Lady Tigers fought their back into the game, but a big fourth period by the Lady Panthers pushed Georgiana to a 43-35 victory.
The Lady Panthers jumped out front 6-0 to start the opening period before the Lady Tigers broke through with a basket from Caroline Wood.
At the end of the first period, the Lady Panthers were on top 8-2.
Straughn came out strong to start the second period when Wood picked up a steal and turned it into two points.
The Lady Tigers inched closer with a big 3-pointer from Lexi Hooks.
Straughn continued the strong start to the period with a layup from Allie Kelley to put the Lady Tigers on top 9-8.
The game remained close for the entire third period, but Georgiana hit a free throw just before the end of the period to take a 25-24 lead into the final frame.
Hooks knotted the game at 27-27, but then Georgiana went on run to secure the victory.
“I felt we didn’t take care of the ball like we are suppose to,” Lady Tiger head coach Scott Kinsaul said. “I was disappointed in our guard play and we had way too many turnovers.”
BOYS
GEORGIANA 69, STRAUGHN 36
The final game of the evening quickly turned into a dunkfest for Georgiana as the Panthers blew past the Straughn Tigers 69-36.
Georgiana found a hot hand early in the form of JaMichael Stallworth. Stallworth dropped in 13 points to give the Panthers a 21-4 lead at the end of the first period.
Keinderus Mobley led the Panthers with 22 points on the night.
Matt Worley and Keaun Samuel led the way for the Tigers with 8 points each.
