Andalusia High School senior Bryce Dubose is trying to earn a scholarship and do good work at the same time.
Dubose is organizing an American Red Cross blood drive for this Tues., Dec. 20, at the First United Methodist Church of Andalusia.
The Red Cross offers students the opportunity to earn a scholarship by coordinating three blood drives that net 50 donors each.
Dubose said his job is to secure locations for the drives, promote the drives, and encourage people to donate. For his first drive, he collected donations and held a raffle for donors. This time, donors will receive holiday T-shirts from the Red Cross.
The drive fits with Dubose’s career goal. He plans to enroll in the nursing program at LBW Community College and work toward an RN degree with the long-term goal of becoming a travel nurse.
“A bunch of people in our family are in the medical field, so that’s how I got interested,” he said. “You see them in it, and it makes you want to be in it, too.”
At the first drive he coordinated, the ARC collected 49 pints of blood, so he actually needs 51 pints this round.
Donors can schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-Red Cross, or by visiting www.redcrossblood.org. The sponsor code is BRYCED.
Walk-in donors also are welcome. FUMC is located at 403 East Three Notch, or beside city hall. The drive will be in the church’s fellowship hall.
