Covington Region Honor Flight is about halfway full for May’s flight, and organizers are now seeking the community’s help to honor local veterans.

Kendra Majors, chairperson of the local honor flight organization, said that 17 veterans, nine guardians and six staff members have signed up so far.

“We have about 22 slots still open for veterans and guardians,” she said.

The board has about $5,000 on hand, but needs about $18,000 to make the trip.

The trip is slated for Wed., May 3, 2017, and World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans are invited to apply to visit the World War II memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Korean and Vietnam memorials and the Air Force memorial.

“If you are interested, I encourage you to get your name on the list,” she said.

The group has secured a direct flight from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Reagan National in Arlington.

“The trip will be a little more than 24 hours,” Majors said. “It’s a long day, but it’s a worthwhile to honor our veterans for their service and sacrifice. It’s truly a day that our veterans, guardians and staff will not forget.”

Because the group was able to secure the flight at a less expensive price, the cost for guardians will decrease from $550 to $375 this year.

Anyone who wishes to sponsor a veteran can do so for $375.

Any donation would be appreciated.

“We can’t do this without the generous donations of our local businesses, residents and civic organizations,” Majors said. “We appreciate your donation to honor our local heroes, who gave so much for our country and our freedoms. This trip is a very small token of appreciation for veterans who risked their lives for our country.”
