Sgt. Jason Scruggs has been named this week’s Andalusia Police Department officer of the week.

Sgt. Scruggs has been employed with the Andalusia Police Department since 2010.

He has more than six years of law enforcement experience.

He is currently patrol supervisor over A-shift, under the direction of Lt. Alice Donaldson.

In addition to his duties as patrol supervisor, he is also a trained traffic homicide investigator.

Sgt. Scruggs and his wife, Christi, make their home in Butler County with their two children, Hannah and Carter.

Sgt. Scruggs says that his work preference is day shift and enjoys spending his free time metal detecting, specifically for old coins.

He is an avid Alabama fan and his favorite meal is a ribeye steak with fries.

He offers the following advice to anyone choosing a career in law enforcement, “Being a police officer is often a thankless job. Don’t choose it for recognition or glory. If you treat others with respect they will treat you the same way. Also, find an outlet away from work a hobby or something you enjoy doing to give you a chance to unwind from the stresses of the job.”

“Sgt. Scruggs came to the law enforcement community as a rookie officer,” Police Chief Paul Hudson said. “He began his career later in life than most of our officers at APD.

“When time for promotions arose, Sgt. Scruggs was already leading his shift by example. His level of maturity assisted in making rational decisions and helping to keep up officer morale in a time where most officers were not sure that dawning the gun and badge was something they wanted to continue to do. Scruggs works to keep his shift running smoothly and efficiently. We’ve enjoyed watching the growth of Jason from patrol officer to patrol supervisor and hope he continues to grow and learn with us at APD.”
