The expectation that U.S. Sen. Jeff Session would earn an appointment in the cabinet of President-elect Donald Trump has been fueling speculation about Sessions’ eventual replacement.

After it was announced on Friday that Trump has offered the attorney general’s office, Gov. Robert Bentley, who will make the temporary appointment, made one thing clear: The appointee

must be committed to carrying out Trump’s agenda and capable of winning a statewide election to keep the seat.

Bentley was in Washington Friday for meetings with Republicans in Alabama’s congressional delegation, many of whom are considered contenders for the appointment.

Bentley, in an interview, said he would not appoint a caretaker, or someone who would just hold the seat temporarily and not run for election. He also ruled out appointing himself.
