Students at Opp Middle School on Tuesday had the opportunity to get their vision checked.

Dr. Andrew Carter of Covington Eye Care checked the vision of sixth and eighth grade students.

OMS Principal Sharon Spurlin said some 60-70 students took advantage of the free service.

School nurse Tracy Thompson said this was the first time that the free service was offered at the middle school.

“There were some students who had not had an eye exam,” she said.

Spurlin said she was grateful for the service provided to her students by the local optometrist.

The American Optometric Association recommends children receive an eye examination at least once every two years or more if there are risk factors.

Here are some indicators that your child may be experiencing vision problems:

  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking;
  • Short attention span;
  • Avoiding reading and other close activities;
  • Frequent headaches;
  • Covering one eye;
  • Tilting the head to one side;
  • Holding reading materials close to face;
  • An eye turning in or out;
  • Seeing double;
  • Losing place when reading; or,
  • Difficulty remembering what he or she read.
