The No. 1-ranked Andalusia Bulldogs (9-1) finished off the regular season with a 35-0 shutout-win over cross county rival Straughn Friday night in Andalusia.

“It’s really great to get that win,” Andalusia head coach Trent Taylor said. “You want to see that kind of performance at the end of the year because it’s about to get tougher each week as we enter the playoffs. I was pleased with the way we threw the ball, but we still are going to have to eliminate some of the penalties that hurt us. Hats off to Straughn, those kids really played hard and both teams played a clean game.”

Straughn got the ball to start the game, but the Andalusia defense held the Tigers on fourth down to get a turnover on downs.

William Lindsey had a big hit behind the line and Ridge Riley came up with a sack to force fourth down.

Straughn attempted to punt the ball on fourth down, but the Tiger punter’s knee made contact with the ground before he was able to get the punt off.

The Bulldogs took over on the Straughn 8-yard line and needed just two plays to find the end zone.

Jamal Hourel capped off the drive with a 10-yard score to get the Bulldogs on the board early. The extra-point was good to put Andalusia on top 7-0 with 8:30 left in the opening quarter.

The Tigers got off to a strong start on the next drive when Brock Hammett connected with Jacob Hawkins for a 20-yard pick up.

Hammett went right back to Hawkins on the second play and picked up 13 yards for another Straughn first down.

Andalusia’s defense stepped up and forced another turnover on downs.

Matt Worley made a big stop in back for the Tigers on Andalusia’s first down play. The play helped the Tigers force a punt from the Bulldogs.

Straughn took over following the punt, but once again the Bulldog defense stood tall and forced the Tigers to punt.

Kendrick Brown broke up pass from the Tigers to give the Bulldog defense a boost.

Hourel got the handoff on the Bulldogs next play and went 24 yards for an Andalusia first down.

Ethan Wilson then found Derrick McQueen for a 28-yard gain and another Bulldog first down.

Three plays later, Sebaskin Stallworth hauled in a pass from Wilson and went 34 yards to pay dirt. The extra point from Wain Yongkuma put Andalusia up 14-0 with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.

Straughn picked up a first down a couple of plays into the next drive on pass from Hammett to Hawkins, but Antonio Gurley made a couple of big stops in the Tiger backfield to force the Tigers to punt the ball.

Zack Woods broke off an 18-yard run to start the next drive and couple of plays later Wilson hit McQueen for a 45-yard pass down the sideline.

Roosevelt Weaver finished off the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run straight through the heart of the defense. Yongkuma’s extra point gave the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead with 7:15 in the second quarter.

Andalusia’s defense forced another punt from Straughn following a broken up pass by Tyquise Jenkins on third down.

Woods had a big 30-yard run on the next Bulldog drive, but the Bulldogs missed a long field goal attempt with three minutes left before halftime.

Straughn began to move the ball down the field, but back-to-back sacks from Ridge Riley forced the Tigers to punt the ball.

Andalusia attempted another field goal just before halftime, but the attempt came up short and the Bulldogs were up 21-0 at intermission.

The Bulldogs opened up the second half with a since of urgency and Wilson found McQueen for a 44-yard touchdown four plays into the third quarter. The extra-point split the uprights and gave Andalusia a 28-0 lead with 10:27 left in the third quarter.

After forcing a turnover on downs, the Bulldog offense went back to work tacking on the final score of the game.

B.J. Anderson took the handoff from Wilson on jet sweep and scampered down the sideline before cutting to the middle of the field for a 42-yard score.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Andalusia’s Allan George picked off Straughn pass for his Class 4A-leading seventh interception of the season.

“I was super proud of the effort from my team tonight,” Straughn head coach Chris Wilson said. “I felt like we player a lot harder tonight then we have the past two weeks. There was good excitement in the locker room, and that ‘s the type of excitement that we need heading into the playoffs. Andalusia did a great job, but our guys competed hard and couldn’t be prouder.”

Both Andalusia and Straughn will play next week in the first round of the state playoffs. Andalusia will host Alabama Christian, and Straughn will travel to Mobile Christian.
