This might have been the best year ever for the Kiwanis Covington County Fair.

Fair Board president Larry Avery said the club counted 16,903 people who walked through the gates.

“We don’t have all of the numbers yet,” he said, “But the James Gang said this was the highest grossing year they’ve ever had.”

The weather was most cooperative, with no extreme temperatures, and only a sprinkle of rain on Saturday.

“We had rain insurance for Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” Avery said. “We’ve bought that for the last two or three years, but thankfully, we didn’t need it.”

Avery said the total number in attendance equals more than half the population of the county. There were more than 3,000 people at the fair Friday night alone.

“We don’t know how much we made yet, but it was a very good year.”

The Kiwanis Club’s mission is Children Priority One.

“All of our monies go to children,” Avery said.

Among the charities supported by the local club are Community Christmas, Miracle League, scholarships at LBW, Key Club, Sav-A-Life, area high schools, and MOPS.
