The Opp Board of Education recently extended Superintendent Michael Smithart’s contract for four more years and gave him a 4 percent raise.

According to dat from the state department of education, Smithart’s salary was $103,020.

“It’s four years,” Smithart said. “The only change in compensation was the 4 percent raise the board voted for every other employee.”

A 4 percent raise puts Smithart’s salary at $107,042.

The legislature this year approved a 4 percent raise for teachers and other school employees who earn less than $75,000 per year, as well as principals and assistant principals. All other employees will get a 2 percent raise.

In 2012, the board also agreed to cover Smithart’s medical and retirement benefits rather than increase his salary.

According to the state department, Andalusia City Schools Superintendent Ted Watson is paid $113,704 for the fiscal year 2016 and Covington County Schools Superintendent Shannon Driver is paid more than $107,000, after the board of education approved a 4 percent raise for him in June.
