Classes at the Alabama Aviation Center training site at South Alabama Regional Airport will begin Aug. 22.

The Star-News reported in May that the classes would return to the airport site.

On Thursday, Dr. Vicky Ohlson, interim president of Enterprise State Community College sent a press release confirming that the Alabama Aviation Center had been temporarily closed at the end of last summer due to lack of support funding.

“However, local legislators, including State Sen. Jimmy Holey and State Rep. Mike Jones supported a $120,000 annual appropriation, which was passed by the legislature at the end of its regular session in May,” she said.

Both high school and traditional students may now complete eight of the nine courses required for an aviation maintenance technology (AMT) certificate.

Scholarships are available and include Workforce Development Dual Enrollment scholarships for high school students with a minimum of 2.5 grade point average.

Admission and registration will be on site at the AAC facility located at 21760 Bill Benton Lane, Andalusia, every Tuesday from 8 a.m. until noon and every Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., beginning Aug. 2 and ending Aug. 17.
