She may only be a freshman, but the 6-foot-5 River Baldwin asserted her dominance on the competition this season and picked up a spot on Class 1A First-team All-State for the 2015-16 AHSAA basketball season.

“It’s a great feeling,” Baldwin said when she found out she was selected. “It’s just one step towards my bigger goal of a basketball career.”

Entering her second season on the varsity squad, the freshman phenom helped led the Lady Eagles to the South Regionals in Dothan.

The Lady Eagles finished the season 14-14 with a 5-1 record in Class 1A, Area 2 play. The Lady Eagles hosted and won the area tournament.

Baldwin’s season included a scoring average of 25.8 points per game, and averaged nearly 30 points per game over the final weeks of the season.

Along with the astronomical scoring average, Baldwin averaged 10.9 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per game.

She shot 64 percent from the free-throw line and 57 percent from the field.

There were several games were Baldwin’s dominance completely took over, including one triple-double and 19 double-doubles.

Baldwin said that there are parts of her game she wants to improve on before next season.

“I want to improve my footwork and my ball handling,” Baldwin said. “Next season, I will get to run a few new positions. Those are things I’ve got to do to became a better player.”

The freshman hasn’t made any decisions on where she will attend college to play ball, but there have been plenty of interest from many of the top women’s basketball programs in the country.

Several coaches, including Florida State’s head women’s basketball coach Sue Semrau, have made the trip to the rural county school to check out the up-and-coming prospect in person.

Scouts, during the Boo Williams Invitational last April, noted her as a low-post prospect with imposing size and agility that brings off-the-charts potential to the front court.

“Promising future with potential next level impact,” one scout said of Baldwin.

Last season as an eighth grader, Baldwin was a second-team selection for the Class 1A girls All-State team.
