Andalusia’s Kyle Lawrence and teammate Dustin Egusquize of Marianna, Fla., took home the top spot in the 34th Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic in San Antonio, Texas.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Lawrence said. “It’s the biggest team roping event in the world. I’ve been going the past few years, and the good Lord was with us this year.”

The pair competed against several other cowboys from across the nation for cash prizes, new trucks, trailers as well as bragging rights.

For their efforts, Lawrence and Egusquize picked up more than $200,000 each in cash and also become the proud new owners of brand new Chevorlet trucks and trailers.

“It was just an awesome day,” Lawrence said. “It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was a little kid. Every roper dreams of winning the George Strait event.”

The two cowboys blazed out of the chutes, roping and securing all three heads of cattle in a blistering 13.99 seconds in the championship run.

The 13.99 time was the fastest time for roping three steers in the history of the of the George Strait Classic.

“When the last guys finished and we knew our time was better, we just went crazy,” Lawrence said. “I tried to call my dad and my wife right after, but I had to hang up because I was crying so much.”

Lawrence said he spent the entire 13 hour drive back home answering calls, emails and texts from friends and family congratulating the pair on the win.

Lawrence and Egusquize started off strong in the Red Wrap run, clocking in at 4.06 seconds for a first place finish. They also finished at the top in the Go round with another 4.06 run.
