Alabama Road Contracting Services, LLC, a local company, will begin work Monday on the major sidewalk project slated for the west side of town.

Mayor Earl Johnson said Friday the company will begin the project on Snowden Drive near Cooper Pool.

The city received a side grant through the Alabama Department of Transportation for the project, which will extend a sidewalk from Dunson Street down Prestwood Bridge Road to Cedar Road, and extends the Church Street sidewalk to Snowden Drive. An alternative in the bid, which is included in the price, takes the Prestwood Bridge Road sidewalk from Cedar Drive to Rosewood Lane. Alternate B adds a sidewalk on Church Street between the bypass and Snowden Drive.

Alabama Road Contracting Services’ low bid was for $398,960.

Engineer Jeremy McMath of Civil Southeast Engineering, who designed the project, said the focus will be on completing the base project first. If unforeseeable events don’t increase the projected cost of that project, Alternate A and Alternate B will be added at a later date.

The city’s matching portion of the project will be 20 percent.
