An April 12 run-off that is expected to have very low turnout will cost the state an estimated $500,000.

The state GOP runoff is between Matthew Brown and Jackie Zeigler for the District 1 state Board of Education seat. Zeigler ran first in a four-party field, but did not get a marjority of the votes cast. Brown is the incumbent.

In the seven-county board district, which includes Covington County, the only county which has a local race on the runoff ballot. Kyle Adams and Kylan Lewis will meet in the runoff for the District 4 seat on the county commission currently held by Carl Turman. Turman chose not to seek reelection.

The two men led a three-man field on March 1.

The hefty price-tag for the one-district state runoff is expected to reignite a movement to end runoff elections. Alabama is one of the few states that doesn’t have winner-take-all rule for primaries.
