High school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field or learning more about different career paths at a hospital could take part in a summer job shadowing program at a local hospital.

Mizell Memorial Hospital Marketing Coordinator Kristen Averitt said that the hospital is looking for students to take part in the program, which will begin with orientation on June 7, and then run from June 13 through July 22, 2016.

Students will report to work each morning at 8 a.m., Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, for the course of the program.

Averitt said the purpose of the program is to provide students who may be interested in a career in the medical field an opportunity to view the real world of medicine first-hand. During the course of the summer, they will be exposed to all areas of hospital work.

Any student 14 (or entering the ninth grade) to 18 years of age may apply.

Parents must give written permission for their child to participate and participants must abide by the rules and regulations of the program.

Averitt said all program participants are required to attend the orientation meeting.

“Orientation covers several important topics, such as safety issues and code of conduct,” she said. “It also includes a hospital tour, a chance to meet department managers and issuance of a scrub top and identification badge.”

Participants are required to submit a physician’s statement and receive a TB skin test during orientation.

Three references are required per application, with two coming from teachers at the child’s school.

Deadline to submit all forms for application is April 22.
