The Andalusia Civitan Club held its annual Clergy Day in February. This special recognition shows the clergy of all faiths that their ministry is appreciated in the local community. Civitans were inspired to hold an annual Clergy Appreciation Day by an event that occurred during World War II. On Feb. 3, 1943, when the USS Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine, the ship sank in the North Atlantic. Four chaplains aboard the USS Dorchester (one Catholic,, one Jewish, and two Protestants) gave their life jackets to four young soldiers. Not only did the four chaplains perish, but also 675 soldiers. Brandon Averill was the guest speaker for the meeting.
