Late free throws lift Eagles

The Pleasant Home Eagles picked up a big area win on Friday night in Pleasant Home when they knocked off the Brantley Bulldogs 40-34.
The Eagles got rolling quickly out of the gate when Chase Gunter knocked down a 3-pointer to kick off the game.
Pleasant Home added to its lead moments later when Aaron Warthen went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.
Robert Scott then pushed the lead up to 10-1 after he buried a long-range 2-pointer followed by a 3-pointer.
At the end of the first period, the Eagles held a 10-5 lead.
Warthen got the Eagles started in the second period with another perfect trip to the free-throw line.
However, Brantley rallied back with 12-straight points to go up 17-12 with 4:14 left in the first half.
Garrett Barton cut into the lead after he grabbed and offensive rebound and put it straight back up for 2 points.
The Eagles ended the scoring in the second period when Gunter connected with Hunter Ward under the basket for an easy layup.
At halftime, Brantley was on top 17-16.
After Brantley scored first to start the third period, Scott put in a fast-break layup off a steal and assist from Warthen.
Warthen then gave the Eagles back the lead with a nice layup of his own.
Brantley took the lead right back with a layup on the other end, but Gunter responded with a big 3-pointer to go up 23-21 with five minutes left in the third period.
Scott pushed the lead to 25-22 with a jumper, but the Bulldogs answered with a 3-pointer to knot the game up at 25-25.
Scott continued his strong performance with a layup off an assist from Barton.
Barton then capped off the scoring in the third period after corralling an offensive rebound in the final seconds of the third period and lofting up a baby-hook to put the Eagles up 29-25 heading into the final period.
Warthen started the scoring off the fourth period for the Eagles with a layup off an assist from Barton.
Scott followed with a 3-pointer to put the Eagles on top 34-27.
After two straight Bulldog baskets cut the Eagles lead down to three, Gunter put in a layup with 45 seconds remaining to put the Eagles up 36-31.
The Eagles held off Brantley in the final seconds and perfect trips to the free throw line from Walt Weaver and Gunter gave the Eagles a 40–34 win.
The Eagles where led in scoring by Scott with 14 points.
Gunter finished the night with 10 points.
Warthen added 8 points for the Eagles in the win.
“I thought we played kind of nervous at times and we had some key mistakes,” Pleasant Home head coach Troy Turman said, “but overall I thought we competed really hard and made the plays to win the game when we needed to…We did a good job at the free-throw line and we played as team… I was very pleased with the win.”
