A week after heavy rains flooded and washed out county roads, a number of them remain closed. Flood waters have receded, but river levels are still high, and recurring rains have prevented repairs.

As of Thursday morning, the Covington County EMA had reported to Alabama Emergency Management Agency an initial damage assessment of $3,161,435 from Christmas flooding.

EMA director Susan Harris said the total included Covington County, Andalusia and Opp estimates.

“This number will increase when the rain waters have receded and crews are able to inspected all roads and bridges,” Harris said.

Data from Choctawhatchee Pea and Yellow River Watershed Management gauges shows that in the past two weeks, 15.11 inches of rain have been recorded by gauges on the Yellow River at Hwy. 84, while 8.76 inches of rain were recorded at Yellow River on Hwy. 55.
