The Lower Alabama Arts Coalition featured a juried art show this month.

Participants in the juried art show were honored with a reception earlier in the month.

Dorothy Burkett’s “Ambiguity” won best in show. Burkett, who is 80, said she’d never won a “best in show” before.

She set out to paint a flower, she said. When she was working on it, she said, her husband walked by and commented on the bride and groom.

Later, her art students saw it in her studio. One commented on the bride and groom. Another argued it was a painting of an angel vs. Satan. Another saw several angels.

“At that point, I decided to just go with it,” she said.

She is shown holding the painting, which is also in the background.

Other winners were:

• Acrylic – Dorothy Burkett, “Ambiguity,” first place; Sara Beasley, “Pumpkin,” and Margo Russell, “Mossy Pond,” merit winners.

• Drawing – Roger Powell, “My Welcome Home,” first place; Sara Beasley, “Ornaments,” and Roger Powell, “Hidden Fountain,” merit winners.
