The Pleasant Home Lady Eagles toppled the Red Level Lady Tigers 29-10 Wednesday night in the second round of the Covington County Junior High basketball tournament in Pleasant Home.

It was a slow start to the game, but Red Level got the first points when Amie Catrett got a steal and went coast-to-coast for the basket.

Pleasant Home got its first basket a few minutes later when Kalli Grace Turman connected with a short jumper to tie the game up 2-2 heading into the second period.

Hope Gunter got the first points of the second period with a layup to take a 4-2 lead for the Lady Eagles.

Red Level cut into the lead when Ashlyn Joyner went 1-for-2 at the free throw line, but that was the only point the Lady Tigers managed in the second period.

The Lady Eagles got points from Bess Worley, Peyton Huckabaa, Turman and Gunter to give Pleasant Home a 12-3 lead at halftime.

Pleasant Home continued to pour it on in the third period with and extended the lead to 20-3 heading into the final period. Amy Bulger, Daisy Cordle, Worley and Gunter each scored in the third period for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles began the final period with a 9-0 run with five points from Gunter and two points from Cordle and Bulger to give Pleasant Home a 29-3 lead.

Red Level never gave up and picked up points from Maggie Wilkerson, Morgan Ard and Joyner to close out the game.

Wilkerson led the Lady Tigers with 6 points.

Gunter led the way for the Lady Eagles with 11 points.

“It’s always a very physical game when we play Red Level,” Pleasant Home head coach Jerry Davis said. “They played a combo defense on us and they kind of shut down our two scores, but the other girls stepped up and did a good job. At this age, all you are really worried about is seeing improvement, and I’m seeing that. Tonight was by far the best defense we have played all year. It was a good night and I’m proud of them.”

The Lady Eagles will take on the Straughn tonight at 6 for the girls’ championship game at Pleasant Home.
