The Opp Benevolence Fund and employees of JR’s Lawnmower Shop have teamed up to spread Christmas cheer a little farther this holiday season.

Joe Richburg, owner of JR’s Lawnmower Shop, started Christmas for Children in 2010 and the Opp Benevolence Fund has always sponsored Community Christmas.

They’ve merged into Community Christmas this year.

“We are still pushing for letters to WAMI and Joe,” Richburg said. “This year, though, no matter if the child brings a letter, parents and guardians still have to fill out an application.

Dates for Community Christmas sign-ups are Nov. 19 and Dec. 1 at the First United Methodist Church Grace Building between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Forms are available at JR’s Lawnmowers, area churches and the Opp Chamber of Commerce.

Assistance will be available to the first 200 children who register.

“The program is only available for children 12 and under,” Richburg said. “It’s for children in the Opp, Babbie, Onycha, and even children in the city of Andalusia.”

Richburg said they have also teamed up with the Gideons and are going to give each family a Bible.

“We still need donations,” he said. “Remember, it’s all about the children.”

Local merchants or residents who wish to donate money or specific items children have requested, are asked to call Richburg at 493-9645.
