Pleasant Home (1-7, 1-4) broke a 17-game winless streak last Friday night against Florala, now this week the Eagles look to play the spoiler role against the playoff bound No. 6 ranked Brantley Bulldogs (6-2, 4-1).

“We can’t make the playoffs but this gives us a chance to play spoilers and make them travel in the first round of the playoffs,” Pleasant Home head coach Chris Mason said. “That, obviously, isn’t the best thing and it’s not why we are playing, but it is what it is. It would be a huge win for a program.”

A huge win it would be indeed, all-time Brantley owns a 14-1 record over the Eagles, including a 62-14 win last year for the Bulldogs.

“Our guys have a lot of confidence coming into the this game,” Mason said. “Wins give you a shot in the arm, and that is exactly what we needed. We have had a good week of practice, and now we just have to stay focused on the little things.”

When Brantley has the ball, they will go the air early and often, Mason said. The Bulldogs have scored 254 points this season. They have also won five-straight games since falling to No. 5 ranked Georgiana 29-18 in week four.

“They are going to throw the ball a lot,” Mason said. “This week at practice, we have been stressing the need to defend the pass well. We have put a lot of emphasis on that. They have very good quarterback and a few receivers with good hands. We are going to have to keep their quarterback on his back. If we let him set back there, he will pick us apart.”

Last week, the Eagles picked off two passes in the win over Florala, and Mason said that would have to continue to give them a chance at betting Brantley.

“For us to win, we have to create turnovers,” Mason said. “Last week, we had two interceptions against Florala. We have to continue to build on last week’s success.”

On offense, Mason said the Eagles will continue to mix it up like they did last week.

“We did a good job mixing up our offense last week,” Mason said. “We were able to even it out a little more than it has been. This week, we will have to keep that same balance. If we are one-dimensional, they will eat us alive. We have to be able to pass and run the ball. We need to sustain drives, and then we will just see what happens.”

Mason said that last week’s win was great, but the Eagles have to continue forward.

“It was great to see the smiles on the players’ faces last week,” Mason said. “They have worked just as hard as any one else, and they deserved that win. That is the past now. It’s always good to get that first one, but now we have to build on it. We have two games left against Brantley and Samson, and we want to end the season on a high note.”

Kickoff between the Eagles and the Bulldogs will be at 7 p.m., Friday night in Pleasant Home.
