A local woman is behind bars after she allegedly led Opp Police on a vehicle pursuit, foot chase and her vehicle struck a patrol car Sunday night.
Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said that at approximately 6:42 p.m., patrol officers responded to a theft report at Grocery Outlet on North Main Street.
When officers arrived at the scene, they were advised that the suspect, later identified at 36-year-old Julie Yvonne Wright, had fled from the area on a Chevrolet C1500 pickup truck.
“A D-shift unit made contact with the suspect’s vehicle on Brantley Street and the suspect fled north on Brantley Street and turned westbound on Lawrence Avenue into the driveway of a residence,” McDonald said. “The suspect placed the truck into reverse and exited from the vehicle fleeing from the officer on foot.”
McDonald said the suspect’s truck struck the officer’s car and stopped.
“The officer gave chase on foot and took the suspect into custody in the backyard of a residence,” he said.
Wright was arrested and charged with theft of property III, attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless endangerment, possession of marijuana II, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence.
McDonald said other charges may be pending.
She was booked into the Covington County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
