When construction began on the new development for seniors (Hummingbird Landing on Moore Road, Andalusia), I immediately attempted to apply for an apartment. However, once again I was denied simply because my income is more than the 75 percent median income in the state of Alabama. Previously, and for the same reason, I was denied residence at both Southern Oaks Apartments in Opp and Saddle Ridge I & II Apartments in Andalusia.

The denials are all due to LIHTC (Low Income Housing Tax Credit), which all of the aforementioned apartments fall under. I researched this 1986 act and I do appreciate its purpose; however, I don’t think I am alone in the opinion that seniros such as myself should be afforded well planned, quality , desired apartments as well. We are faithful taxpayers, who have worked steadily and have contributed much to our country and state. While many of us are currently homeowners, if later in life, we wish to give up our homes and reside in apartments, there should be quality apartments for us, just as there are for the low income.

I am hopeful that this need will be addressed in the very near future, and steps will be taken to do the right thing in bringing about fair housing for all senior citizens. It is a disservice to the beautiful city of Andalusia, as well as to the state of Alabama, to provide quality apartments to only a segment of the senior population.
