Eleven locals left Andalusia for the Last Frontier Sept. 8, with the Andalusia Adult Activity Center.

Debbie Carter of the AAC said the embarked tour with a land tour and then a cruise through Glacier Bay.

Ports of call included Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, she said.

“Those there got to go on different tours,” she said. “Some went on a helicopter ride and others took a jetboat for whale watching.”

There was a tour of the glaciers at Mendenhall.

“We did an Alaska salmon bake, lumber jack show, which was just like TV,” Carter said.

The group toured Denali State Park, which boasts Mt. McKinley, North America’s highest peak, which was recently renamed Denali by President Barack Obama.

“We stayed at the princess lodge,” she said. “Only a handful get to see the top of Mt. Denali. We got to see them.”

During a wilderness tundra tour, the group saw bears, moose, goats and an eagle.

“It was breathtaking,” she said. “We saw snow-capped mountains and it was fall.”

Carter said for those who missed the Alaskan trip, there are several other trips available.

They are planning a trip to New York City aboard Amtrack next October.

The trip will be a seven-day, six-night trip.
