Sara Catherine Sansom doesn’t have a Facebook account, but she frequently borrows her mom’s phone to read posts from people she knows.

Earlier this month, that’s just what the 9-year-old was doing when she read Donna Kelley’s post about Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Sara Catherine immediately announced she was taking action.

Mrs. Kelley’s daughter, Megan, died in February of leukemia. The Megan Kelley Smiles Foundation was established earlier this year in her memory. The foundation began its fundraising efforts with a 5K in May.

“We were praying for her,” said Sara Catherine, who also participated in the 5K.

She told her parents, Ashton and Ronnie Sansom, she wanted to have a lemonade stand to raise money. Soon, her dad was building one from pallets and her mom was decorating it.

“My Nonnie made brownies, too,” she said.

With a little help from her little sisters, Caroline and Amelia, who worked to stop passers-by, she soon reached the $600 mark. As word of her endeavor spread, Heather Bryan matched that total.

“She is a Rodan and Fields representative, and said she gives 100 percent of her profits to mission fields,” Mrs. Sansom said. “When she heard about this, she decided to make this her cause this month.”

Contributions continued to come in, and when Sara Catherine’s proceeds were deposited earlier this month, she was at the $1,500 mark.
