Scarecrows in the Park is going to be a little different this year, event organizers said Thursday.
The eighth annual event sponsored by the Frank Jackson Trail Masters is held during the months of October and November.
The scarecrows, which are built and exhibited throughout Frank Jackson State Park, will host exciting events every Saturday, organizer Juanita Blocker said.
“We want it be a little different this year,” Blocker said. “We’re hoping to have music in the park on Saturdays.”
Blocker said there will also be some wildlife exhibits and nature programs will include information about native animals who live in the park and surrounding areas.
“These include snakes, both venomous and non venomous so you can identify the snakes that are beneficial and not harmful,” Blocker said.
Additionally, there will be water safety programs for kids and parents for safety while enjoying boating, fishing and swimming that are available at the park.
Workshops are planned to assist anyone who is interested in participating in the annual event. The workshops help with the many materials needed to construct scarecrow entries.
The workshops are scheduled for Tues., Aug. 25 at 6 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 3 at noon and Thurs., Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. All workshops are located at the Opp Adult Activity Center.
Many different individuals, businesses, schools, civic and church groups participate in the event each year, and the trail masters would be honored to be an entry from you, Blocker said.
Scarecrow set ups are Sept. 18-29. The grand opening is Fri., Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. at the state park in Opp.
Once the park is set up, golf cart tours will be available for senior adults or other persons who need assistance. To schedule a guided tour or to arrange for golf cart tours, call Donnie Money at 334-488-5033 or Barbara Tisdale at 334-493-3706.
Entrance to the scarecrows event is free, but it costs $3 for adults to enter the park, $1 for adults 62 and over and $1 for kids ages 6-11.
