The Opp City Council on Monday voted 3-2 to contribute $7,500 toward a new Christmas tree for the city’s downtown area.

Mayor John Bartholomew said the tree was 26 feet tall, with LED lighting and includes a 6-foot nativity star.

“DRA (the Downtown Redevelopment Authority) wants it, and they’ve been trying to raise money for it,” Bartholomew said.

In the council’s work session, Councilwoman Mary Brundidge said she couldn’t vote for it.

“I can’t see myself voting for this when there are roads in my district that need help,” she said. “Barnes Street.”

Councilman Mike Booth, who is also a member of the DRA said they were putting up half of the amount for the tree.

“It’s not like we’re not used to spending,” he said.

Councilman Bobby Ray Owens said in the work session he can’t see putting that much money in a tree.

“Seems like a lot of money,” he said.

When it came time to vote, Owens had a change of heart.

Covington County Economic Development Commission Director Rick Clifton told the council a nice Christmas tree could be a tourist attraction, which is something that could draw more folks to the City of Opportunity.

Arlin Davis voted in favor and TD Morgan voted against it.
