Streamlines process for customers

Drivers won’t have to wait in line anymore to renew their licenses as the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) announced initiatives Thursday to modernize the driver’s license system.

“If you go online, all it’s doing is making it more efficient for Alabama drivers to renew their driver’s licenses,” ALEA Spokesperson Kevin Cook said.

In addition to renewing licenses online, drivers can select an appointment time that suits their schedules to make a visit to one of ALEA’s driver license examinging offices; customers can seek to renew their licenses, non-driver IDs or order a duplicate license may choose to use the self-serve kiosks to trim visit times; drivers can download a digital license on their smart phones; and ALEA has updated its computer stations, testing stations and other equipment at its offices, and at probate judge and license revenue commissioners offices, across the state.

Customers can renew licenses online once every eight years. The examiner makes any changes necessary.

The cost to renew online is $36.25, plus a service fee of $2.75.

Those renewing online must print a temporary license. A permanent license will be mailed out within 30 days.

Cook said monies from ALEA’s current budget funded the upgrades in technology and convenience for the licenses. The renewal kiosks were purchased with grant money.
