A Covington County grand jury recently indicted a woman who allegedly stole a State Trooper’s handcuffs.

According to court records, Melissa Cross of Andalusia was indicted in a separate case for escape III, theft of property III, driving under the influence and having improper tag lights.

According to the indictments, Cross is accused of escaping or attempting to escape from the custody of Alabama State Trooper Matt Kennedy. Cross allegedly obtained Kennedy’s handcuffs, which were valued in excess of $500; was in physical control of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance; and operated a motor vehicle without proper tail lights.

In February, Cross was arrested by Kennedy after he stopped her on Sixth Avenue for driving under the influence, according to Star-News archives.

The driving under the influence, theft of property III (class A) and improper tag lights charges are misdemeanors. The escape III charge is a class C felony.

Cross was booked into the Covington County Jail on a $34,000 bond.
