When Christina Little sees a head of hair, she sees a piece of art.

And she’s hoping to see lots more as the owner of Andalusia’s newest barbershop — The Gentlemen’s Cut.

The Gentlemen’s Cut, which has been open for more than three weeks, is a barbershop just for men and boys. The shop is located across the street from the police station.

Little said she’s always loved cutting hair.

“I like making people happy and like making people feel good about themselves,” Little said. “It’s kind of like art. I love to paint, too. You can look at someone’s hair and you can kind of see what you want it to look like, and what he or she wants it to look like. I just sculpt it into place.”

Little said her parents, Chris and Angie Nelson, bought John Scherf’s old law office and surprised her with it at Christmas.

“I was thrilled and got in here and we started remodeling,” she said. “My dad, he redid everything in here.”

The Gentlemen’s Cut holds three barbershop chairs and one for shoe shines.

Little said her dad is looking for another shoeshine chair so that it can give kids the opportunity to make money.

“I want the boys in the community to want to earn, and save their money and be able to work for things,” she said. “On Saturdays I’m trying to get them to get up with me to come in for a couple hours.”

And allow them to keep the profits.

“The only thing it’ll do for me is that it draws attention to the shop,” she said. “Whatever money they make, they keep it.”

A haircut is $12. A haircut with a beard trim is $15.

Since she’s been open, Little said business has been pretty steady. Customers have already come in and filled the chairs on the back wall.

“It’s been really steady,” she said. “I said a prayer my first day in here. I said, ‘Lord I’m not trying to be greedy, but please let me do enough haircuts to pay my bills and take care of my daughter. ‘

“It’s been above what I asked for,” she said. “It’s been good.”

Before opening up her own shop, Little worked for two years at Wiggins Barbershop.

Hours of operation at The Gentlemen’s Cut are Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

No appointments are necessary.
