Several children from around the county, and a few out-of-towners enjoyed the opening day of the Andalusia Tennis Association’s summer tennis camp.

 

 

 

Instructors Don Smith and Monica King helped the kids learn some of the basics skills for the game of tennis.

 

 

 

One day, the campers learned how to hit forehand and backhand shots. The campers started the day by running a short agility course. Smith said that day one was just practice on the agility course and that later in camp it will become a race between two teams.

 

 

 

Helpers from the Andalusia High School tennis team volleyed shots to the campers who return with either a forehand or backhand shot.

 

 

 

King said that the campers most enjoyed the fun game of  “jailbreak.”

 

 

 

In jailbreak, campers all start on one side of the net with Smith volleying over shots from the other side. Campers who returned the volley into the green were safe. If they failed to do so, then they went to Smith’s side, which was referred to as jail.

 

 

 

To get out of jail, they had to catch a ball in the air or off the first bounce. Catching the ball in the air would also send the hitter to jail.

 

 

 

The game would go until one camper was left out of jail, and the winner of the game got a prize.

 

 

 

Camp will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the next six weeks from 8 a.m.-noon each day.
