MONTGOMERY-Pleasant Home’s magical season came to end Friday morning when the Lady Eagles fell 9-5 at the hands of the Isabella Lady Mustangs in the AHSAA Class 1A state softball tournament in Montgomery.

 

The Lady Mustangs got on the scoreboard first in the opening inning when Kacie Adams drove in Caley Booth with a single. A throwing error on the same play also allowed Hailey Underwood to score to give the Lady Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

 

In the top of the second inning, the Lady Mustangs added four more runs to take a 6-0 lead early in the contest.

 

The rain began to fall as the fourth inning got underway with the Lady Eagles trailing 7-0.

 

In the bottom of the fifth with it raining hard, the Lady Eagles’ bats came to life.

 

Camille Holley led off the inning with a single, but was followed with two quick outs.

 

Jade Self came up with two outs and ripped a double into the outfield that allowed Holley to come around to score the Lady Eagles first run of the game.

 

Anna Bulger then traded places with Self with a RBI double of her own.

 

An error by the Lady Mustangs shortstop allowed Taylor McGhee to reach first safely, and also allowed Bulger to score.

 

Cassidy Godwin added to her late inning heroics with a run-scoring triple, and then Abby Walker drove in Godwin with a single to cut the score to 7-5.

 

Following the single, the heavens opened up, and a monsoon engulfed the playing field forcing the officials to postpone the remainder of the game until Friday morning.

 

When play resumed the following day, the Lady Eagles’ momentum from the night before just wasn’t enough to carry them to a win.

 

A throwing error in the top of the sixth inning allowed the Lady Mustangs to add another run to their lead, and a mental error in the top of the seventh gave the Lady Mustangs a 9-5 advantage.

 

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady Eagles had a few good at bats, but the balls were just falling right into the gloves of the Lady Mustangs.

 

“We had a few mistakes,” Lady Eagles’ head coach Jessica Gibson said. “Overall, we played very well. What I’m most proud of is our heart. Our heart was 100 percent in this tournament. We are a young group, and we are hoping to just build up from here. Just being here is an accomplishment. I couldn’t be more proud of them. They make me really proud to have been their coach. This is just an unbelievable team, and awesome group of kids. God has a plan for us, and we know that everything happens for a reason.”
